The marine corps was created in April 15,
1949 with the small number of 380 for two reasons:
(1) Korea is surrounded by water on three sides and also
(2) The need of land and sea operations in the Yeosu and Suncheon incident of October 19, 1948.
After the creation, marines successfully carried out the suppression of communism in Jinju, Mt. Jiri, Jeju area. During the Korean War, the marines were victorious in the Tongyoung landing, Incheon landing operation, and battle of Mt. Dosol and made history for their invincible marines, eventually becoming known as the “Legendary Marines”.
Their marines were sent to the Vietnam War and victorious in the Chaibindon defense, as well as many other missions. Afterwards the marines were known as a small but strong army that protecting the area from Baekryong island to Gimpo peninsula.
