This space was built to compare the national defense qualities in 19th century between England, Spain, France, U.S, Japan, and China, etc. During the 19th century, the foreigner’s trade request with the Chosun grew from simply a request to a demand. The appearance of foreign trade ships and war ships were a great threat to the Chosun. The Chosun acknowledged that it was better to accept the trade offer rather then suffer in war as many did in the opium war. The strong foreign countries used their strong military powers to guarantee trade with Chosun. For that, the Chosun refused trade and started using force to resist. However the lack of understanding with foreign countries as well as the lack of military power made it hard for the Chosun to fight with foreign countries. The Geomun Island incident best describes this situation.
